The regular season is over and it is time to get started on the road to the Super Bowl. There are some interesting match ups this weekend that will probably bring at least one surprise.
Saturday games are:
Cincinnati (9-7) at Houston (10-6)
Cincinnati surprised a lot of people this season and slid into the playoffs with a wild card, despite a season ending loss to Baltimore. Houston wrapped up their spot a few weeks ago, but are somewhat crippled. They are on their 3rd QB and actually had to use Jake Delhomme after their third guy, T.J. Yates had a shoulder injury.
Detroit (10-6) at New Orleans (13-3)
Many consider the Saints the strongest team in football and think this squad is actually better than the Super Bowl team. First, they have to get by the Lions. Detroit almost won a shoot out last week against Green Bay’s second team. They do have a bit of momentum as they finished the season strong. This strong finished followed a mid season slump, so it will be interesting to see how the Lions show up on Saturday.
Sunday games are:
Atlanta (10-6) at New York Giants (9-7)
We have two very scrappy teams playing here. Atlanta didn’t quite live up to expectations last year but they still have that high flying offense that can catch fire at anytime. The Giants have had to rely heavily on Eli Manning this season as the rushing game has been terrible. Victor Cruz has stepped up this season and has been a hero in several key games. This might be the hardest game to pick out of the first round.
Pittsburgh (12-4) at Denver (8-8)
This game might be the biggest mismatch of all, except that Big Ben is playing with a severely sprained ankle and Rashard Mendenhall is out. I’m not sure if this is a big enough handicap to give the Broncos an upset here. After the defense pulled them through for a six game winning streak, they finished the season with three straight losses. Tebow has been horrible as of late and will have to pray hard in this one.
They still might be in better shape than the Denver Broncos, who are also dealing with injuries to key offensive personnel and have been struggling mightily behind Tim Tebow.
