What is a Moneyline? Betting the Moneyline
Bettors often times wonder if they should wager with the odds, or if they should go with the moneyline bet. Moneyline bets are one of the most misunderstood betting options in all of the sports gambling.
Moneyline bets can be used with pretty much any type of sport. Each sport will have a winner and a loser, so sportsbooks will have a team in which they feel will win, and a team that will lose. Of course the winning team will give a worse payout than the team that is the underdog. In the world of baseball, moneyline bets allow you to not have to worry about the score, or how many runs were scored. For football, basketball and hockey – things are the same, where you are picking the winner.
Moneyline betting is a type of bet that is pretty cut and dry. If the team in which you have bet on loses, you lose the money. There is no middle ground with moneyline betting. For example, if you are betting the Brooklyn Nets +120, it doesn’t matter if they cover what the spread was for odds betting, you bet them to win straight up, and if they don’t you lose. There is no juice in moneyline betting, which means that the sportsbook does not take any of your winnings.
With moneyline betting you have the ability to risk very little to win a lot. What we are saying is that for example if the Chicago Cubs are at +200 against the St. Louis Cardinals, and you feel like the Cubs can win the game, bet the Cubs moneyline. This bet gives you the chance to win a lot of money because for every $100 you wager on this game, you would win $200. There are money lines as high as +350 for some of the major sports to bet on.
Lastly, you are probably thinking – why can’t I bet on all of the favorites and win money? First of all, if you bet the favorites – we all know that in professional sports you cannot predict who is going to win a game. Even being an easy pick; there are still upsets. Plus, moneyline betting does not allow you to win even money on the teams that are the easy favorites. For example, it may take you $250 to win $100 sometimes. Do that too many times, and you are bound to lose a game or two.
Moneyline betting is great because it takes the odds out of the game. Moneyline betting can be beneficial to your bankroll, if you are smart about it. Moneyline betting is not a real risky type of bet, unless you are picking the big time underdogs. When the teams are close, the moneyline will be pretty close to even.
