What is a Straight Bet? Straight Bets Explained

A straight bet is one of the most common types of sports bets. A straight bet is a type of wager in which you bet on a single game that carries a point spread, a total or a money line. All you need to do to win a straight bet is to correctly wager on the team that covers the spread, or if the two teams cover the over or under.

In a straight bet, when you are betting on a – point spread -, bookmakers create a line or spread for the game. This is a way for sportsbooks to separate between the two teams playing. An example of this is if the St. Louis Rams are a 3-point favorite over the Arizona Cardinals. The Rams will not be given to you to pick straight up (no spread), so you bet them via the odds. Now, the Rams would have to win by more than 3 points for you to win the bet. If they do not, you lose the bet. If the Rams win by 3, it’s called a push, or a tie, and you get your money back. A lot of lines are set with the bet. If they do not, you lose the bet. If the Rams win by 3, it’s called a push, or a tie, and you get your money back. A lot of lines are set with the 1/2, making it impossible to push.

Most straight bets pay off -110, which means for every $110 you wager, you would win $100 in return. This is termed the “juice,” which is the amount you are paying the sportsbook to make this bet. You can bet less than $110. $110 would win you $100 in a bet in which you win. If you lose the bet, you lose the money in which you wagered on.

When you are betting on a “total” or an “over/under,” you are trying to bet on whether the two teams will score more or less. For example, if the Rams and the Cardinals line was set at 41.5, you have the chance to wager if you feel they will score more (over) or less (under). These are typically at -110 payouts as well.

The last kind of straight bet would be a money line bet. For example, instead of taking the odds, you think the Rams will win, but you don’t know by how much, so you take the money line. The money line will change depending on the game. For the Rams, they are listed at -150. What this means is that if you wager $150, you would win $100. As for the Cardinals, they are listed at +130. What this means is, for every $100 you wager you could win $130.

Straight bets are all over sports betting. There is not a most common sport in which straight bets are bet on more. Straight bets are in the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB, along with all the other small professional sports. Be sure to check out straight bets at your favorite sportsbook today. While straight bets are not as enticing as other types of bets, due to it being just one bet; it is a way in which you have the chance to win at an easier rate than parlays, if bets or reverse bets.
